Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria. It is located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Abuja is so far the only premier planned city in Africa, which was built in the 1980s and officially became Nigeria’s capital on 12 December 1991, replacing the role of the previous capital: Lagos. Abuja is known for being the best purpose-built city in Africa as well as being one of the wealthiest. Abuja is the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS. It also harbours the regional headquarters of OPEC.
Annually Abuja hosts several high profile conferences seminars and general meetings and international sporting events as organizations, corporations and event managers take advantage of the many arenas, and world class conference and seminar facilities in the City. Abuja is home to some of the best hotels in the region, with ultra-modern shopping malls, as well as large swatches of green area designated as parks and gardens throughout every district and neighbourhood in the municipal area.
